Fort Myers

FORT MYERS  -  A GREAT LOCATION

The city of Fort Myers, also known as the City of Palms, is in the midst of a major urban redevelopment project. This is a river city that really never capitalized on its waterfront location. It is in the process of transforming a once sleepy southern Florida city into a vibrant and modern river front destination. There are older quaint neighborhoods filled with renovated single family homes. There are high rise modern towers lining the river front. There are night clubs, restaurants, businesses, food stores, boutiques, hotels, libraries, schools, marinas and much more. Fort Myers is the center of government for all of Lee County.

When visitors think of Fort Myers they usually think of the palm trees on McGregor Boulevard, or the spring training sites for the dynamic Boston Red Sox and Minnesota Twins, or the homes and gardens of Thomas Edison and Henry Ford, or the Caloosahatchee river, or Dean Park, or Edison Park or all the friendly people they met while visiting here.

The name Fort Myers is more than just a city. It is a much larger area encompassing many locations, some urban, some suburban, some old and some new. Locals tend to use the terms South Fort Myers, old Fort Myers, North Fort Myers and Central Fort Myers. There are opportunities to live in each of these sections. The lifestyle and architectural choices are many. You can live in a penthouse condominium overlooking the river, a 1920 Spanish style home, a garden like condo, a modern pool home or a seven figure mansion. There are gated communiities and private golf course communities all over, many of these built since 2000.

The extended Fort Myers area appeals to almost everyone. Many people think that the Fort Myers area is one of the nicest places in our great state. It is a wonderful location for retiring or for raising a family. Our climate, natural beauty, lush tropical landscapes, soft white sand beaches and the Gulf of Mexico are all waiting for you. Come to the land of friendly people and take advantage of one of the best real estate buyers markets in the country.

SOUTH FORT MYERS

South Fort Myers is the major residential area for much of Lee County. This is a large geographical area that runs from Colonial Boulevard all the way to the Gulf of Mexico. It is bordered on one side by the large and lovely Caloosahatchee River and on the other side by beautiful homes, fine dining and great shopping. It is an easy drive from South Fort Myers to other parts of the area, including Cape Coral and Naples.

Wherever you choose to live in South Fort Myers you will be surrounded by beauty and an unparalleled quality of life. You can live in a condo, a high rise tower, a townhouse, an estate or a regular single family home. You can live on the river, on the beach, on a golf course, on a canal, on a boat, in a gated yacht or country club, or on a regular neighborhood street.

In South Fort Myers you will meet people from all over the globe. Some of them live here full time. Others just come for the winter season. Most of them come by plane and car. Some of them come by boat right to the dock in their back yard.

South Fort Myers is a residential location that will captivate you. There is lush vegetation, excellent roads, a variety of established developments and plenty of new construction. The public and private schools, churches, recreational facilities, public infra-structure and general ambiance are first rate.

South Fort Myers offers a wide variety of price options, from $100,000 to $20 million. This area was a major site for developers during the last few years. A serious over supply of new construction exists. There are many wonderful deals in brand new homes, as well as re-sale homes. Prices have come down significantly since late 2006 when the buyers market began. Lighthouse Realty Of The Islands can steer you to the best buys available. We know the re-sale and new construction markets very well.

Your choices are almost endless and depend only on the type of liftstyle you wish to live. Most homes have swimming pools in their back yards. Water plays a large role in South Fort Myers. In addition to the river, there are canals, natural marshlands and small coves. Your home will also be just minutes from white sand beaches, full service marinas and the famous barrier islands.

OLD FORT MYERS

As you travel from South Fort Myers to the City of Fort Myers along McGregor Boulevard you will soon approach Old Fort Myers. These are side streets along McGregor until you get to the city proper. On the left side of McGregor these streets go right to th edge of the Caloosahatchee River. These are quaint neighborhoods, first built fifty years ago, with a mixture of styles and home sizes. Many of these homes have been renovated and have large yards and mature foliage. Some of the mansions along the river are stunning.

On the right side of McGregor these side streets lead to neighborhoods where you know your neighbors, there are front porches and residents take evening walks. It is possible to buy beautiful homes in old Fort Myers at very good prices. As you approach the limits of the city, there are two historical districts, Edison Park and Dean Park. These are older areas where some of the homes still need renovations. During the past few years these neighborhoods have become highly coveted and many profesionals who work in downtown ofices are buying them to be close to where they work.

FORT MYERS BEACH

Estero and San Carlos Islands make up the community of Fort Myers Beach. These are small islands, seven miles long and maybe one half a mile wide. From the north-west point to the south-east tip, a gleaming white sand beach fronts the Gulf of Mexico. Fort Myers Beach is fairly quiet in the off season and fairly crowded and very lively in season.

There is a small town atmosphere here. The population is made up of fishermen, artists, merchants, winter residents and plenty of tourists. Tourists stay in small hotels or rented condos and homes. Tourism is the major industry of Fort Myers Beach. It has a self-sufficient economy with shopping, dining, boat rentals and charters, banking, movies, bars and schools.

Fort Myers Beach is only about fifteen minutes from the greater Fort Myers area. There is an active housing market here, with homes on canals and high rise condos lining the beach. The Beach is home to a large shrimp and fishing fleet. There are a number of excellent seafood restaurants. During the winter months the population rises to about 15,000 people. There is also an active Spring Break element to the tourist population.
